José Bedia, a multidisciplinary artist who essentially focuses on painting, installations and drawing, is one of the best known Latin American artists in the contemporary art world. From the very start his work has included a review of primary cultures where he finds a spirituality that no longer exists in the modern world. He is an observer of the simple details of life and nature, since that is where he looks for that spirituality in order to vindicate the past, traditions and values, not just in the sphere of the arts.
The prolific use of religions and symbols, combined with the vast pallet of colors in his work has generated a unique reflection on our collective past. The inspiration and force behind his work lie in his own collection of African and pre-Columbian art, whose ethnic groups are juxtaposed with the degrading forces of the contemporary global world.
Bedia was responsible for the creation of the spectacular design of the floor and railings for the Opera and Concert Hall of the Performing Art Center in Miami, 2006. Among his individual exhibitions we can mention: There, Around the Corner, Museo de Arte, Puerto Rico, 2005; José Bedia, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo, Panamá, 2004; Estremecimientos, Museo Extremeño e Iberoamericano de Arte Comtemporáneo, (MEIAC), Badajoz, Spain, 2004; José Bedia, Gallagher Gallery, Royal Hibernian Academy, Dublin, Ireland, 2002; Blanco Espiritual, Museo de Bellas Artes, Granada, Spain, 2002; José Bedia, Art Museum, Florida International University, Miami; PS1 (MOMA), New York, 1999; Crónicas Americanas.
